The two countries most famous for designed paper lanterns are China and Japan. These lanterns are now popularly used as decorative lighting in most countries for illuminating many events.
Chinese ornamental paper lanterns are generally placed on the ground or hung up after lighting them. These decorative lanterns vary in form and design. Traditionally these lanterns are white but they can now be seen in various colours. People use many lexis and maxims on lanterns to denote affections and send out messages. Generally, there are five types of Chinese paper lanterns in use now. The five groups are “tomato lights”, “Buddha gastronomy”, “crystal magic”, “baby’s bottom” and “rolling paper lanterns”.
The latter type is very large and generally used at religious festivals, while crystal magic lanterns in numerous shapes and designs shine brightly, reflecting their name. Tomato light lanterns are oval, very large, and typically red.
Rolling paper lanterns are similar, with tall cylindrical forms. They are often used to decorate bars and restaurants. Finally, baby’s bottom lanterns are used widely as Christmas lights. They are considerably smaller than the other types of decorative lantern. Although Japanese paper lanterns are usually round in shape, other designs can be seen as well. Although red is also used, white is the traditional colour.
The light source in paper lanterns is in the centre and around it you have rice paper kept in position with steel or wooden frames. You can also find simple lanterns that are made up of just a paper bag with a candle inside, along with more complicated versions of lanterns. Some more complex designs have metal frames with hoops holding up the paper. Others use more sturdy paper or are made of collapsible bamboo.
You don’t need to bring out paper lanterns just to decorate, as they can also function as a practical way to light your home. You can hang them from ceilings and trees or place them as lamps on tables and floors. You can have them hanging in a line on a string or wire to light up a pathway.
Paper lanterns come in tons of different shapes, colours, sizes and styles. While the usual lanterns are cylindrical, round or rectangular, those that are bit more seasonal come in more fitting shapes. For instance, Chinese lanterns are made to look like pagodas or dragons. For a different occasion such as Halloween, you might find lanterns shaped like pumpkins or stars.
